Dress to Reflect Your Brand
The first step is to think about how you want to be perceived. Are you aiming for a polished corporate look, a relaxed creative vibe, or something in between? Your clothes should align with your brand values and the message you want to send.
For example, a solicitor might opt for tailored clothing in neutral tones to convey professionalism and trust, while a wellness coach might choose soft, natural fabrics in calming colours to reflect a more holistic, approachable brand.
Ask yourself:
Focus on Grooming
Small details make a big difference in photos. Make sure everyone has had recent haircuts, clean nails, and polished shoes. Subtle grooming choices go a long way in helping you look and feel your best.
Choose Clothing That Fits Well
Fit is everything. Clothes that are too loose or too tight can be distracting or unflattering on camera. Choose pieces that fit you comfortably and allow you to move naturally. When you feel good in your clothes, it shows.
Avoid anything with large logos, busy prints, or overly shiny fabrics, these can draw attention away from your face or distort in certain lighting.
What colours work best for my headshot?
Choosing the right colours for your headshot can make a big difference to the overall feel of your image. The aim is to keep the focus on you, while wearing tones that complement your skin tone, brand, and personality.
In general, solid colours tend to work best on camera. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, blues, greens, and richer deeper shades often photograph beautifully and create a timeless, professional look.
I’d usually recommend avoiding:
- Neon or overly bright colours
- Very busy patterns
- Large logos or graphics
- Tiny stripes or checks, which can distract on camera
Black can look very elegant and professional, while softer tones can create a more relaxed and approachable feel. Ultimately, the best colour is one that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
If you’re unsure, bringing a couple of outfit options to your session is always a great idea. Sometimes small changes in colour or layering can completely change the look and feel of your final images.
Bring a Backup (or Two)
I always recommend bringing more than one outfit, especially for personal brand shoots. It gives us the flexibility to capture different moods or settings. You might have one look that’s more formal and another that’s relaxed or lifestyle-based. Layers, such as jackets or scarves, are also a great way to add variety without a full change.
Pay Attention to Grooming and Details
Neat grooming makes a difference. Iron your clothes, check for lint or pet hair, and consider a quick mirror check before your session. If you wear makeup, keep it natural and true to your daily look; the aim is to feel like the best version of yourself, not someone completely different.
Most Importantly, Be Comfortable and Be Yourself
Ultimately, the best outfit is the one you feel confident and comfortable in. When you’re at ease, it comes through in your posture, your expression, and your whole presence on camera. That’s what makes a photograph stand out, not just the clothes, but the confidence behind the lens.
